Kathy – thanks! I know it’s so easy to just chuck it in the trash, but recycling it makes me feel so much better

Scott – I know what you mean. For really sensitive data, I also plan on destroying it on my own. I do have a lot of “crap” on VHS and dvd that just needs to go, though.

If I can’t make something else out of my techotrash (or pass along my usable components to someone who can use it as an upgrade) I usually keep it in a pile in my garage – my own personal techno landfill? I've been manually opening old disks and shredding them. I know it's a lot of work, but I'm confident that I have destroyed them myself. I'm looking into recycling the plastic and metal casings. I also need to convert our old vhs tapes over to dvd. Green disk sounds like a good option, but I always feel skeptical about services like these. Do they really shred everything? I had to post a comment. This type of article needs to be written. There are way too many about the next best gadget and none about what to do with the old. When cannot recycle it is very big problem.
