No automatic WordPress upgrade for me
Yuck. I tried upgrading WordPress earlier this week using the Automatic WordPress Upgrade plugin (which has worked fine in the past) to no avail. It kept getting stuck on making a backup copy of my database. I had not done the upgrade before the most recent one, so perhaps that had something to do with it. I’ve been putting off doing it manually due to lack of time, but finally got around to it this evening.
It really wasn’t all that bad due to the fact that I had time and no distractions. The extended instructions on the WordPress site were pretty straightforward, and it took me one hour from start to finish (including backing up the database and previous version of WordPress).
I’m getting used to the new dashboard, and am glad that it’s done! Have you had any issues upgrading? Are you putting it off?

Were you on 2.5 going to 2.6? Just checking because I’ve been using the Automatic WordPress Upgrade myself.

BCarter – I was actually going from 2.3.? to 2.6. I had been lazy about 2.5, which could have also caused part of the Automatic Upgrade issue.
When I used the Automatic Upgrade plugin, it just wouldn’t go past the database step. I kept getting a blank screen. After I backed up the database manually, I used the plugin again, and tried to skip the database step. That didn’t work either – I just got another blank screen. At least nothing bad happened!
Tony – I agree that keeping the older version is useful, but only up to a point. I had read that WordPress 2.3.x can be hacked now, so I wanted to take care of things asap. I’ll have to check out Drop12 – thanks for the info!
I upgraded, and used a plugin to do it. It went smoothly, but I upgraded from the last recent WP upgrade. Someone one advised to disable all plugins manually before using the upgrade plugin. Had you done that?
At any rate, I’m glad for you that it is finished. Your blog looks great!

I was trying to upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6 with the plugin and got hung up on the back up too. I think that it might not be ready for the 2.6 yet. I’m thinking I will just wait a bit longer to upgrade!
Mrs. Mecomber – I had not disabled any of the plugins manually… Thanks for the advice – I will keep that in mind for next time!
Hawksdomain – I might try Mrs. Mecomber’s advice! Good luck
