Saving Money

Do you really need your cell phone plan?

I was talking to my friend the other day about bringing down their household costs, and he mentioned that their family cell phone plan cost $90 a month.  This is just for he and his wife.  They are on a network plan where they can talk to other members of their family for free (ie. their parents, sisters, brothers, etc.).  However, I was still amazed at the cost. My husband and I each have a cell phone from Virgin Mobile, and they are pay-as-you-go phones.   At a minimum, it costs us $160 a year to keep these phones...

MagicJack an alternative to Vonage?

We are currently using Vonage for our local and long distance calls from home, but we are always looking for ways to save money. I was checking out this post at BudgetCents.net, and have ordered a free 30-day trial from magicJack. Our current local and long distance bill is about $30 per month – if magicJack works out, we would end up paying $40 per year (this is for the first year – it is then $20 each subsequent year).  That would be a savings of about $320 per year! Basically, you plug one end of the magicJack device...

Balancing frugality with living life

We’ll be traveling this weekend again to see family, which got me thinking about balancing frugality with life in general.  To me, material possessions aren’t very important.  This isn’t to say that I’m not thankful for what we have, but our life isn’t focused on getting more “stuff”.  On the other hand, when it comes to traveling to see family, our costs seem to be getting increasing with each trip (gas, tolls).  However, we’re not willing to cut the number of trips we make to see family each year. There are alternative routes to save on tolls, but it...

Time to buy plane tickets for Thanksgiving?

Our family is taking our first real vacation since 2004 – now that our son is 2, it is time for him to begin to see the world (we’ll start with the USA).  We have close friends that live in Arizona, a state which neither my husband nor I have seen.   These friends are getting ready to return back east in another year or two, and have been wanting us to visit.   The time seemed right for us to plan a trip. We thought that sometime around Thanksgiving would be a good time, and our friends have been looking...

CVS makes me almost like shopping

I almost liked shopping today, but it was only because of the amount of money we saved. Sometimes I think that I am the only female who doesn’t like to shop – I hate buying clothes, shoes, and don’t own any make-up (unless you count my yearly purchase of a tube of chapstick). When I do shop, I know what I want/need, and like to get in and out as fast as I can. All that being said, I have to admit that I don’t mind shopping as much when I know there is a great bargain to be...

Boomertowne review

**UPDATE: Boomertowne is dead.  They did not cash in any gift cards since the early part of May 2008, and stopped communicating with their users.  Please see this post for more information. Boomertowne.com is one of the few legitimate sites that I have found that really gives an opportunity to make money (in the form of gift cards). Here’s a breakdown of the site: You earn points for participating in the Boomertowne community. You can participate via chat rooms, forums, making a profile, playing games, and rating quotes or jokes (just to name a few). You can earn up...
