About Us

PhD in my mailbox today

Is it karma?  I mentioned that I had a shiny degree in yesterday’s post.  Today, when I checked my mail with my son, we discovered a mailing tube from my (now) alma mater.  I also received a letter from the registrar.  Here are my observations: 1.  They print doctoral degrees on larger paper than bachelor’s degrees.  I wonder if this is a plot by framing companies, since I would have to pay more money if I want to frame it.  I also realized today that I have no idea where my bachelor’s degree or high school diploma are. 2. ...

Big changes, perhaps

Having a kid changes everything.  Before our son was born, we altered our financial plan.  Currently, we are still saving for retirement.  We have an emergency savings, but our debt hasn’t been dissolving at a fast pace.  Until now, we have been ok with this. That’s because of the plan.  The plan was for me to get a job when our son started school.  With my shiny degree, we figured that I could find something.   That salary would be used to pay down debt and then accelerate our savings.  Good stuff. Now we are thinking of homeschooling.  Big change...

Getting kids back into a routine after traveling

It’s not quite 10am, and my 2-year-old son is down for a nap (he usually sleeps in the early afternoon).  He has a gym class at 10:30am, but won’t be going.  The one part of traveling that I don’t like is trying to get the kid back into a routine. I follow 3 rules to help get my little one back on track: 1.  Let them sleep:  Most kids need to catch up on sleep after traveling, whether they like to admit it or not.  Between 8 and 9 am this morning, my son had a serious case of...

What a great weekend!

Although we were a little worried about the cost of traveling, it was a wonderful weekend.  My grandma is in her 80′s, but she is still very active.  She had a pillow fight with my son on Saturday (not an all-out pillow fight, but still an official pillow fight) – this alone made the trip worthwhile.  We were also able to spend a lot of Sunday outside, which was really nice. Now it’s time to return to the daily routine, but I’m so glad we took the short trip.  Even with gas and food (I picked up Subway for...

Have a great weekend everyone!

We are getting ready to travel to NY to see my mom and great-grandma.  They haven’t seen the kid since January, so we are really looking forward to the visit.  I hope that everyone really has a nice weekend and gets to spend some quality time with their family! I won’t be dropping Entrecards, but I will be sure to drop on everyone who drops their card this weekend once I get back.  Take care, and if you are traveling, be safe!

Funny Monday night story…

Both my husband and I are science geeks, but we try not to drill too much science into our 2-year-old. I thought we were doing a pretty good job, until I looked in the bathtub tonight. We have bathtub crayons (a guaranteed fun bath!), and I noticed the molecular structure for water on the shower wall. I politely asked my husband about this, since I was pretty sure it was not the kid’s artwork. He said that our kid wasn’t liking the other drawings of water (water drops, water in a glass, etc.), but was appeased with the molecular...

Hello!

Sorry – I went out of town this weekend, brought my computer, but forgot my AC adapter (Doh!).  I will be catching up on Entrecard today and tomorrow. I am in the process of trying to rescue the old Dell from the blue screen of death.  Apparently the Trojan.Vundo virus has taken its toll?  I cleaned it multiple times, and then shut it down.  Now it won’t boot.  Good stuff! Hope everyone had a good weekend!

How would you handle this situation?

The ignorance of people never ceases to amaze me. I do need to divulge a little personal information to put this story in its proper context.  I have dark hair and eyes, but am not sure of my ethnic heritage because I do not know my father.  My mom is Caucasian, but I don’t really look like her.  If I had to guess, I would suspect that I may be Native American as well, but your guess is as good as mine. So here’s my story: There is a mother in our parent-child program who is somewhat annoying.  Up...

Using a rubber mallet to fix your MacBook?

It seems to have worked for me! I was having some trouble tonight after my hard drive started whirring on my (less than one-year old) MacBook. I’ve had the hard drive replaced once (this is why my published thesis is about 20 pages shorter), and was pretty ticked to hear it causing a commotion once again (no pun intended). The thought of traveling over 1.5 hours to the Apple Store tomorrow after my son’s class was not appealing, so I decided to take matters into my own hands – after backing everything up, of course. Turns out that a...
